Richard E. Davies

Richard E. Davies 85, of Melvin, passed away suddenly at Port Huron General Hospital on Saturday, June 18, 2005. Seventh born to Charles Ira and Bessie Leola (Williman) Davies, he arrived January 15, 1920, in Breckenridge, MI and spent most of his early years in Ann Arbor. August 8, 1942, Richard married his beloved sweetheart, Faith Honorine Carless, at the home of her Speaker Township parents. Married for 57 years, she passed away December 25, 1999. Through the years, the couple had the opportunity to savor life in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arizona in addition to Michigan. In 1957, they chose to make Michigan their permanent home and returned to the family farm in Melvin. This dynamic gentleman was never one to be idle. Among his numerous achievements, he was most proud of the many political campaigns he helped shape and promote, his service as Deputy State Treasurer and Comptroller of the Mackinaw Bridge Authority, his work as a special finance officer for both the Michigan Education Department and for civil defense in Battle Creek, and his contributions as Controller of the City of Taylor for twelve years. Mr. Davies’ knowledge of finance, his expertise in working with people, and his commitment to efforts that enhance the quality of life for all members of a community have made him a leader to be admired and emulated. He responded to human need wherever he found it and gave generously of his many talents so that the quality of human life may have been enriched. He had served as a member of the Social Services Board of Sanilac County and a member of the Speaker Township Zoning Board of Appeals and Board of Review. To each act of his public service, he sought and achieved excellence. Richard is survived by a son, Bernie R. (Susan L.) Davies of Melvin; a grandson, Bryan Earl (Jennifer) Davies of Avoca; a granddaughter, Shelby Rae (Brian) Franklin of Marlette; a great-grandson, Logan Richard Davies of Avoca; a sister-in-law, B. Lucille Carless of Yale; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Earl Edward Davies, October 3, 1970; his sisters, Mildred McIntyre and Beryle Davies; and brothers, Robert, Clayton, Dale, Gerald, and Jack Davies; and a brother-in-law, Loyal Carless, of Yale. Richard’s life will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 23, 2005 at Kaatz Funeral Directors, Yale, with visitation Wednesday, June 22, from 3 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Long-time family friend, Bill Bruman will officiate.
