James D. Collins

James Daniel Collins 94, a lifelong resident of Emmett, died Monday morning April 4, 2011, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Saginaw following a fall at his home in Prudenville. He was born September 1, 1916, in Emmett the son of the late Daniel and Euphemia (Cody) Collins. His marriage of 56 years to Josephine Margaret Shanahan was January 19, 1946, in Smiths Creek. Josephine died Friday, December 6, 2002. James served his country with the United States Army during WWII from 1942 to 1945. He was employed by the United States Post office as a rural mail carrier in the Emmett and Goodells areas until his retirement in 1982. James was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Emmett and member of the former Holy Name Society. He was a member of the Gleason-Butler-Sharpe V.F.W Post #5585, Emmett and former 30-year firefighter for Emmett Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed being outdoors and spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law James W. and Bernadette of Greensboro, N.C. and Dan and Brenda of Houghton Lake, daughter Bridget M. Collins of Lakewood, Colorado, grandchildren Shane Collins, Casey (Jessica) Collins of Raleigh of N.C. and Hayley (Josh) LaFevre of Madison WI, Michael and Molly Collins of Houghton Lake, siblings, Robert “Grant” (Ann) of Port Huron, Catherine O’Grady of Sun City, AZ, Jerry (Bonnie) of Centerline, Margaret Hebel of Richmond and Mary Roseanne Lewentz of Port Huron and several nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his sister Eleanor Schaffer and brother Pat. His family honors the memory of James and invites you to visit and share memories Friday 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Kaatz Funeral Directors, Yale, with rosary devotion/scripture services at 7:00 p.m. Rite of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Emmett, with 10:00 a.m. visiting. Fr. Tom Kuehnemund, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel-Kenockee Cemetery.
