Hazel Annette Mahaffy

Hazel Annette Mahaffy 96, of Peck, passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at Sanilac Medical Care Facility, Sandusky. She was born Saturday, December 15, 1913, in Flynn Township the daughter of the late Edwin and Ada (Duckworth) Mahaffy. Hazel attended the Omard School from 1920 to 1927 then graduated from Brown City High School in 1931. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in 1940 and her Master of Arts Degree in 1958 from Eastern Michigan University by traveling to Alaska and completing her last six hours. Hazel also attended Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. She taught two years at the Shooks School, three years at Cheyenne School and 35 years in Yale Public Schools. Hazel traveled extensively in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia and Egypt. She visited the Holy Land in 1951 and 1953 then went on a world tour in 1963. She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church and retired as Yale United Methodist Church Organist in 1994. She served as President and Secretary of the United Methodist Women and was District Chairman of the Wesleyan Service Guild. Hazel was a member of the Third Friday Christian Fellowship, Yale, Over 50 Club in Brown City, and the Peck Senior Citizens. She served as President of the Sanilac Chapter of Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel for 11 years, and received the Distinguished Service Award from Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel in Lansing and was a life member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, Michigan Education Association, and National Education Asociation. Hazel was known for her dramatic art readings, humorous stories, and love for her Lord and Saviour. Surviving are four nephews, three nieces, great and great-great nieces and nephews and her wonderful students. Preceding her in death were a brother Stanley, sister, Norma Jean Seley and a nephew Dale Seley. Her family honors the memory of Hazel and invites you to attend funeral services 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Kaatz Funeral Directors, Yale, with 10:00 a.m. visiting. Rev. Dr. Bernardine Daniels pastor of Yale United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Omard Cemetery, Flynn Township. Memorials are suggested to “Wishes of the Family”.
