Elmer J. Steinhoff

Elmer John Steinhoff 91, a lifelong resident of Melvin, passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2011. He was born May 29, 1920, in Melvin to the late Frank and Esther Steinhoff. Elmer was married for 59 years to Alberta (Elston) Steinhoff. A lifelong farmer and true environmentalist, Elmer found great joy in being outdoors. He was very involved in his community as a member of the Melvin Methodist Church, the Melvin School Board and guiding children in the Melvin Go-Getters 4-H Club. Elmer’s strong character and high values earned him the respect of his family and the community. He was a caring, dedicated husband and father. Elmer will be remembered for his honesty, loyalty, wisdom and good sense of humor. He had a wide variety of interests including sports, photography, music, genealogy and current events. We will always treasure the wonderful memories of our good times together. Surviving are his children Frances (Bill) Beers of Williamson, Ben (Joann) Steinhoff of Melvin, Gary (Pam) Steinhoff of Holt and Pat Steinhoff-Lokey of East Lansing; 10 grandchildren, Tony (Jodi) Beers; Jennifer (Jon) Deming; Mike, Matt, Melissa Steinhoff; Michelle (Ryan) Hack; Jessica (Andrew) Kimichik; Sarah Lokey; Andrea (Nick) Currin; Alyssa Stuparek; six great-grandchildren, Haylie and Drew Beers; Taylor Hack; Kinley Kimichik; Chloe Currin; Greyson Bayer; sister Mary Bell Thompson (Chuck) of West Covina, CA; sisters-in-law Joyce Wolf of Marlette and Jean Kerrins of San Juan Capistrano, CA; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Elmer was preceded in death by his wife Alberta; sister Ula Elston; son-in-law, Tom Lokey; nephews, Henry Wolf, Jr. and Lowell Kerrins. Visitation will be Monday July 18 from 2:00-5:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Kaatz Funeral Directors, Yale.
